A scar sliced through Berlin’s heart. That scar was once the Entlastungsstraße. It was a road carved through the tranquil Tiergarten park, a testament to a divided city. The Entlastungsstraße, or “Relief Road,” lived up to its name. It offered vital relief to West Berlin’s strained infrastructure after the Berlin Wall’s sudden rise in 1961. Imagine Berlin divided, the familiar routes through the city center severed. The Wall choked off the normal flow of life, creating traffic chaos around the Großer Stern. A solution was needed, and fast.

In a mere 44 days, a 1.2-kilometer gash appeared in the Tiergarten’s greenery. The Entlastungsstraße, a temporary fix, was born. It stretched from the Moltkestraße near the Reichstag building, skirted the Platz der Republik, intersected the Straße des 17. Juni, and finally merged with the Potsdamer Straße at Kemperplatz. Its very name, a functional label rather than a proper street name, underscored its provisional nature. At first, “Entlastungsstraße” applied only to the section north of Straße des 17. Juni. The southern part didn’t officially share the name until 1968.

This road, a lifeline for West Berlin, was also a wound on the city’s landscape. Many considered the Entlastungsstraße an eyesore, a brutal interruption of the Tiergarten’s beauty. Yet, it was essential, carrying the vital B96 and the bustling A83 bus route, connecting Wedding and Schöneberg. Even a proposed upgrade to a section of the A103 highway was considered, a move that would have permanently cemented the road’s presence.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 changed everything. The Entlastungsstraße’s raison d’être vanished. Reunification allowed Berlin to breathe again, to heal old wounds. Plans were finally laid to erase the scar. The Tiergartentunnel, construction starting in 1995, would carry the traffic burden, allowing the Entlastungsstraße to fade into memory. The parts of it that were spared got new names. The north part is now known as Yitzhak-Rabin-Straße. The south part has since become Ben-Gurion-Straße. Finally, after the 2006 World Cup, the Entlastungsstraße was dismantled. The land it occupied slowly reverted to green. Even the Komponistendenkmal, a monument to composers, was meticulously restored in 2007. Today, where a highway once roared, trees now whisper, a peaceful testament to Berlin’s resilience. The Entlastungsstraße, once a symbol of division, became a symbol of renewal.
