“Lost in the Louisiana wilderness, a young man’s fate hangs in the balance.” François-Perrault, a name synonymous with education in Canada, began his life with an adventure. Born in Quebec in 1753, François-Perrault’s early life was marked by upheaval. The French regime’s end forced his family to flee. He eventually found himself in New Orleans, a world away from the familiar streets of Quebec. He worked for a merchant, observing the “dissolute, ignorant, and lazy” Creole children while admiring the “educated and well bred” French. He journeyed up the Mississippi to join his father in St. Louis, learning Spanish and working tirelessly. This is where François-Perrault, the future champion of education, first encountered the complexities of a diverse society. His time in the Illinois country also led him to meet his future wife, Ursule Macarty, daughter of a fur trader. The American Revolution interrupted this burgeoning life. François-Perrault’s attempt to collect a debt in Virginia resulted in his capture by British-allied Indians. He was taken to Detroit, a journey of hardship and uncertainty. His survival, he later reflected, hinged on “his good physical condition and luck.” This experience, far from breaking him, seemed to solidify his resolve. In Montreal, François-Perrault embarked on various ventures: retail, bookkeeping, law, even theater. He married Ursule in 1783. He continued seeking a stable position, finally securing the role of clerk of the peace and protonotary at the Court of King’s Bench in Quebec. This marked a turning point, the beginning of his impactful career in public service and education. François-Perrault’s legacy extends far beyond his early adventures. He became a prominent figure in Quebec, a champion of free education for all, regardless of background. He founded schools, developed innovative teaching methods, and even advocated for compulsory schooling, a radical idea for his time. He envisioned a united Lower Canada, where Canadians, English, Scots, and Irish, Catholics and Protestants, could learn and grow together. François-Perrault’s story reminds us that even from challenging beginnings, even after being lost in the wilderness, one can emerge to shape the future of a nation.
