In 1913, a grand edifice arose on York Boulevard. It was designed by the renowned architectural firm of Train & Williams. This building would become the York Boulevard Church of Christ. The church boasts Arts & Crafts styling with Tudor revival influences. Notice the striking square tower. It features a crenelated parapet and a pyramidal roof, adding a touch of grandeur. The main entrance, with its large, crested wooden double-doors, invites you in. Beside the tower, tall, wooden multi-light windows stretch towards the heavens. They sit beneath a half-timbered gable adorned with open eaves and decorative wooden roof brackets. Even the wooden vents on the tower and gable contribute to the church’s unique ecclesiastical craftsman character. The York Boulevard Church of Christ wasn’t always a Church of Christ. The building originally housed a Methodist congregation. In 1936, the site transitioned to become the “York Boulevard Church of Christ.” After serving the community for decades, the building faced a period of decline. It was left empty in the late 1990s and early 2000s, suffering damage from neglect. In 2013, a music promoter leased the building. It underwent minimal renovations and briefly became The Church on York Performing Arts Space. However, noise complaints, lack of permits, and issues with underage drinking led to its closure by the City of Los Angeles in May 2014. The building found new life when it was acquired by Extraordinary Living – A Real Estate Collective. They undertook a full-scale renovation, preserving its historical details while adding modern amenities. This meticulous restoration earned the building recognition as an official historical landmark by the Cultural Heritage Commission of Los Angeles in 2014. The York Manor, as it is now known, reopened in the fall of 2015. Today, the York Manor serves as a versatile event space, hosting weddings, receptions, parties, and more. A separate downstairs space, The Rembrandt, provides a theater-style club for performances. The York Boulevard Church of Christ may be a thing of the past. But its legacy lives on in the beautifully restored York Manor.
