Why is the Steigerwald called Steigerwald? The Steigerwald, stretching between Würzburg, Schweinfurt, Bamberg, and Nuremberg, gets its name from the “Steigen,” steep, west-facing slopes carved by ancient rivers. These slopes, once part of a drainage system flowing towards the Danube, were dramatically altered by the Rhine’s erosion. This geological shift left behind the prominent escarpments that give the Steigerwald its unique character. The name first appeared in 1151, in a document from King Konrad III. It referred to a forest bordering the Ebrach Monastery, highlighting the region’s long-standing connection with its natural surroundings.
