Samuel J Tilden High School opened in 1930. It was built during the Great Depression. The school’s design wasn’t unique. It shared blueprints with several other New York City high schools. The goal was to save money.

The school is named after Samuel J Tilden. He was a prominent figure in New York’s Democratic Party. He even ran for president in 1876. He lost to Rutherford B Hayes. The election was highly contested.
