Stepping onto the grounds of Osaka City Yasaka Junior High School, imagine the echo of students’ laughter. This isn’t just any school. Osaka City Yasaka Junior High School carries a unique legacy. Founded in 1947 amidst post-war reforms, it stands on the very ground of a former national elementary school. This older school, known as Osaka City Yasaka National School, was established in 1940. Osaka City Yasaka Junior High School inherited not only the land but also a piece of its name. The “Yasaka” part comes from the local Yasaka Shrine, whose eight sloping roofs gave the area its name. While the shrine uses the character for “slope,” the school opted for the character “hill,” a subtle yet intriguing difference. The school motto, “Hope, Learning, Gratitude,” encapsulates its spirit. These three pillars guide the students to live fulfilling lives, embrace knowledge, and appreciate their community. In 2001, Osaka City Yasaka Junior High School was recognized for its unique educational approach, emphasizing individual growth and community engagement. The school fostered collaboration with local elementary schools, kindergartens, and even senior care facilities, creating a rich tapestry of intergenerational learning. Students participate in vocational training, experiencing real-world work and gaining valuable life skills. They also connect with the community through joint disaster prevention drills, further solidifying their role as responsible citizens. As of May 1, 2023, the school had 480 students across three grade levels, each with four classes. The school’s vibrant club activities range from sports like baseball, badminton, and volleyball to cultural pursuits like music, tea ceremony, and art. This dynamic blend of academics, career development, and community engagement makes Osaka City Yasaka Junior High School a vital part of Osaka’s educational landscape. It’s a place where hope blossoms, learning thrives, and gratitude flourishes. As you leave these grounds, carry with you the echo of laughter, the whispers of history, and the enduring spirit of Osaka City Yasaka Junior High School.
