Look around you. This is the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine UIWSOM. It stands as a beacon of medical education in San Antonio. UIWSOM’s story is rooted in a commitment to serve. It aims to address the medical needs of underserved populations especially in South Texas.

The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine opened its doors in 2015. It quickly became the second osteopathic medical school in Texas. The first one was the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.

This campus carries a unique historical significance. It was the site of President John F. Kennedy’s last public speech. This happened just before his assassination in 1963. Building 1 is a registered historical site due to this event. The campus is located on 23 acres in south San Antonio. It is about 20 minutes from the main UIW campus.

Before UIWSOM, this site housed the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. The location is now a registered historic district. It sits on the northwest corner of Brooks City Base.

UIWSOM offers the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. A one-year Master in Biomedical Sciences program is also available. The school plans to move its Masters in Nursing and Physical Therapy programs here too.

UIWSOM’s mission flows from the University of the Incarnate Word. It extends the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. The school empowers its community. An Anatomage table offers 3D virtual anatomy. Small group collaboration rooms are available. The osteopathic clinical skills learning studio includes simulation labs. Twelve standardized patient exam rooms enhance the learning experience.

UIWSOM received full accreditation in May 2021. The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation granted it. The next review is scheduled for 2028.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, total medical school enrollment was 626. The entering class had 149 students.

The curriculum integrates osteopathic principles and practices. It emphasizes primary care, social accountability, and community service. Phase I covers essentials and systems-based units. Phase II involves rotations, board preparation, and residency readiness.

UIWSOM seeks applicants committed to serving underserved communities. The admissions committee considers motivation, dedication, and alignment with the UIW mission. They also evaluate academic achievement and life experience.
