Korin, a mischievous sprite of a girl, tugged at her grandmother’s sleeve. “Obaachan,” she whispered, “Is it true the Kusunoki tree at Kyoto Shiritsu Korin Elementary School remembers the school’s first students?”. Her grandmother smiled, “They say it was a sapling when Korin Elementary first opened its doors in 1873 as Konoriyama School in Korin Village, part of Kadono District.” They stood before Kyoto Shiritsu Korin Elementary School, the Kusunoki tree’s sprawling branches casting a dappled shade. The air hummed with the energy of generations of students who had played under its watchful gaze. “Imagine,” Obaachan continued, drawing Korin into a world of the past, “this school has seen so much change.” Korin Elementary wasn’t always Korin Elementary. In 1887, with educational reforms sweeping the nation, it became Hirano Elementary. When Kyoto absorbed the village in 1918, the school transformed into Korin Island Regular Elementary School. Later, a girls’ vocational school was added. By 1922, it adopted the grand title of Kyoto City Korin Island Regular Higher Elementary School. Through all these changes, the Kusunoki tree remained, silent witness to the passage of time. Even the construction work in 1946 and 1947, which saw the entire school building renovated, couldn’t displace this steadfast sentinel. Obaachan pointed to the information board beside the tree. “It’s nearly 120 years old now,” she said. “Almost as old as the school itself.” Korin traced the tree’s name, Kusunoki, written in elegant calligraphy. “It’s our school’s heart,” she declared. Her grandmother nodded. “It symbolizes the roots of this community. It connects the past, present, and future of Korin Elementary.” As they walked away, Korin couldn’t resist glancing back at the Kusunoki tree, its leaves rustling in the breeze. It stood tall and proud, a living testament to the enduring spirit of Kyoto Shiritsu Korin Elementary School.
