“Avenue Denayer-Denayerlaan connects Avenue Victor Rousseau to Avenue de Haveskercke” The Drive of the Tastevin begins there. That’s just one detail about this Brussels avenue. Did you know Avenue Denayer’s name likely honors a Forest alderman? Two aldermen of Forest shared the Denayer name. This quiet street holds a fascinating past. Its story begins with the General Alignment Plan. This plan in 1900 planned street openings in Forest’s eastern district. Avenue Denayer was one of these streets. Other avenues like Zaman Fontaine Vanderstraeten Monte Carlo and d’Huart were included in the plan. Avenue d’Huart was never fully realized. It was replaced by the shorter Rue d’Huart.

On the odd-numbered side you’ll find modest houses. They date back to the 1890s and 1900s. Most have been altered over time. Number 81 is notable. It’s a three-facade house. It still features its original side entrance. Built in 1896 it was owned by J-B Denayer. The even-numbered side shows a different story. Garages were constructed there in 1955. Some have apartments above them. This is part of the Messidor housing project.

The Avenue Denayer Denayerlaan isn’t just about its buildings. Its history also unfolds in its plans. It’s a reminder of urban development in Brussels.
