What was the most mass-produced twin-engine helicopter in the world? Here, before you, stands a Mi-8T, a testament to that very title. The Mi-8T, also known by its NATO reporting name “Hip”, isn’t just a static display. It’s a symbol of Soviet engineering prowess, a workhorse of the skies, and a veteran of countless missions. Developed in the 1960s by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, the Mi-8T quickly became a staple in both military and civilian aviation. This Mi-8T represents the lineage of a helicopter family that has seen service in over 50 countries. It is a testament to the adaptable design, capable of fulfilling roles from transport and combat to search and rescue. In Russia, the military versions of the Mi-8T, like this one, were exclusively sold through Rosoboronexport, highlighting their strategic importance. The civilian models, however, were available on the open market, serving diverse needs across the globe. The Mi-8T’s story begins in 1960s Moscow. The design bureau, led by the brilliant M.L. Mil, aimed to create a successor to the Mi-4. The first B-8 prototypes were crafted in Moscow, with the final assembly taking place at Plant No. 329, the future Moscow Helicopter Plant. This initial model retained elements of its predecessor, the Mi-4, including the four-bladed main rotor and three-bladed tail rotor. However, the Mi-8T evolved. It incorporated innovations like large duralumin stampings and adhesive-welded joints in the fuselage, marking a significant step forward in aircraft construction. Later, the Mi-8T was upgraded with a five-bladed main rotor, boosting performance and reducing vibration. Imagine this Mi-8T in action, armed with UB16-57UMVP blocks loaded with S-5 rockets. Perhaps it carried OFAB-250 bombs. Inside the cabin, the crew used the OPB-1R bombsight and the PKV collimator sight to execute their missions. This Mi-8T would have carried a DP-3A X-ray meter, essential for monitoring radioactivity levels during flight. The Mi-8T also played a critical role during the Chernobyl disaster. These helicopters bravely flew over the burning reactor, dropping tons of sand, lead, clay, and boron to contain the catastrophe. This heroic act came at a cost, with many of these helicopters becoming heavily irradiated and ultimately abandoned in the “machines cemetery” near Chernobyl.
