Dedicated in 1954. That’s the year Loma Alta Park first opened its gates. This 17.33-acre park in Altadena offers something for everyone. It is a testament to community, recreation, and the enduring spirit of Altadena.

Loma Alta Park has a rich history. It began on land purchased from the Joshua Reed Giddings Family. The Kiwanis Club dedicated it for wildlife protection. Over the years, it underwent name changes. In 1959, it was briefly Clarence H. Thurber Park. It was also known as Giddings Memorial Picnic Area. By 1960, it reverted to Loma Alta Park. It then featured the Dr. Clarence H. Thurber community building. It also included the Giddings Grove picnic area.

Imagine the community gathering here decades ago. Families picnicking, children playing, and neighbors connecting. Loma Alta Park has always been a hub. The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation manages it today.

The park boasts a wide array of amenities. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy baseball fields. There are also basketball courts and tennis courts. Children can have fun in the play areas. For those seeking relaxation, picnic tables and barbecue pits are available. Loma Alta Park also caters to equestrian lovers. It features equestrian centers, staging areas, and trails.

Inside the community center, there are computer labs and multipurpose rooms. The gymnasium buzzes with energy. It’s a place where sports and fitness thrive.

Loma Alta Park offers many programs for all ages. After-school programs keep children engaged and learning. Aquatics teams showcase their skills. Baseball and basketball programs teach teamwork and sportsmanship. There are also programs for cheerleading and martial arts. Teen clubs provide a safe and supportive environment.

The park also offers unique programs. These include cooking classes, gardening, and even movie screenings. During the summer, children can participate in day camps. They can also enjoy a summer lunch program.

Remember the pool that was once being refinished? It now offers swimming lessons for all levels. From toddlers to seniors, everyone can learn to swim. There are even classes on snorkeling and springboard diving.

Loma Alta Park is more than just a park. It is a place where memories are made. A place where the community comes together. It reflects the dedication of Los Angeles County. They provide social, cultural, and recreational opportunities.

Take a moment to appreciate the beauty around you. The laughter of children. The friendly competition on the courts. The peacefulness of the picnic areas. Loma Alta Park truly makes life better.
