A wave of peace washes over you. You stand before the Islamic Center of Quebec a beacon of faith in Montreal. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s the first mosque built in Montreal and all of Quebec.

Imagine the early years. A small group of Muslims. They gathered in private homes for prayer. Weekends brought them together a nucleus forming the foundation of the Islamic Center of Montreal in 1958. Their dream a place to preserve their heritage and create an Islamic community.

Seven years later their vision solidified. Bill 194 a private bill passed through the National Assembly of Quebec. On August 6 1965 the Islamic Center of Quebec officially opened its doors. The community had a home. A place of worship and gathering.

The Center wasn’t static. It expanded. It evolved. Phase I of a third extension added two floors. Phase II incorporated the old mosque hall. The plan a larger more welcoming space. The completed center would accommodate 1000 people for congregational prayers. A separate hall for women and girls. Ablution facilities a library offices. Even a space for the deceased awaiting burial.

The Islamic Center of Quebec is self-governing. Democracy is at its core. The center’s affairs are managed by the Consultative Assembly and the Executive Council. An independent board manages the Islamic cemetery.

The community itself is diverse. People from India Pakistan the Arab world Indonesia China. Members hail from Malaysia Turkey Africa the Caribbean Islands Europe and even Afro-Americans. A melting pot of languages and cultures. English French Arabic and Urdu flow through the halls. Khutbas and speeches are delivered in English and Arabic. Generations young and old are part of this vibrant community.

Daily prayers are performed. The times vary with the seasons. Friday prayers are especially important. The sermons Khutbas have evolved. Early sermons were solely in Arabic. Now a brief English translation helps those who may not understand Arabic. The goal is to always make everyone feel welcome and included.

Beyond the prayers the center offers classes for children and youth. They teach Quranic recitation and religious instruction. The center provides social services. It helps those in need. It handles marriages and funerals. It’s truly a community hub.

The Islamic Center of Quebec is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the faith and perseverance of a community. It’s a story of growth adaptation and inclusivity. It’s a place where diverse people gather unified by their shared faith. And it’s a story that continues to unfold.
