High above Bamberg’s rooftops stands the Oberes Schloss a sentinel of history. Imagine the whispers of centuries echoing through its stones.

The Oberes Schloss or Altenburg Castle as it’s also known isn’t just a castle it’s a living testament to Bamberg’s rich past. First mentioned in 1109 it initially served as a refuge a safe haven for those seeking shelter. For centuries it was a lavish residence for Bamberg’s bishops a testament to their power and influence.

But its story is not without its trials. In the 16th century Margrave Alfred Alcibiades von Brandenburg-Kulmbach almost completely destroyed it. A devastating blow during the second Margrave War. Only remnants of the medieval structure remain. Most notably the impressive 33-meter keep a survivor from the 13th century.

Yet even destruction could not erase Altenburg’s significance. This sturdy tower once played a vital role in communication. An iron basket hung from its top. It was used to send fire signals to Giechburg Castle near Schesslitz an incredible 20 kilometers away. Imagine the urgency the coded messages conveyed across the vast distance.

Later the Oberes Schloss was rebuilt in the Romantic period. This is when famous author E.T.A. Hoffmann found solace in one of its towers in 1812. This period inspired the name of the Hoffmannsklause restaurant in the castle’s newer building a tribute to this literary giant.

Today as you stand on the Oberes Schloss terrace you can appreciate the panoramic view. It overlooks the enchanting episcopal town and the beautiful surrounding region. The very sight reaffirms its importance as one of Bamberg’s key landmarks. A place where history and breathtaking views intertwine. A place where stories continue to unfold.
