“A place of rest, a testament to love.” This is the Gemeinschaftsgrabstätte der AIDS Toten, a community burial site in Frankfurt am Main. Located within the city’s main cemetery, this place holds a unique and poignant history. The Gemeinschaftsgrabstätte der AIDS Toten isn’t just a burial ground. It’s a symbol of compassion and remembrance for those lost to HIV and AIDS.

The AIDS-Hilfe Frankfurt established the Gemeinschaftsgrabstätte der AIDS Toten in 2008. It recognized a need for a dignified and respectful final resting place for those affected by the disease. It’s a modern take on traditional burial, offering an alternative for those who may not have family to maintain a grave or prefer a more communal approach. The site provides a space for up to 100 urns. It also offers individual design options within the communal structure. This allows for personalization while maintaining the collective nature of the site. The cost for using the burial site is a one-time fee, making it accessible to many.

This burial site was originally a family plot, belonging to the Dumcke family. One of its previous occupants was Paul Dumcke, a Frankfurt insurance director. His son, Ernst Dumcke, was a German actor. In 2008, the AIDS-Hilfe Frankfurt took over the site, transforming it into this memorial. They preserved some elements of the original site. One notable feature is a central Muschelkalk column, inscribed with the words “DIE LIEBE HÖRET NIMMER AUF” which means “Love never ends”. At the base of this column are four burial chambers.

The redesigned site incorporates a sculpture featuring 100 rotatable Jura marble cubes. Each cube can display the name and dates of a deceased individual. The other sides of the cubes are available for personalized inscriptions or decorations. There’s also a Jura marble stele at the head of a rust-colored steel plate. This area serves as a focal point for Abschied and burial ceremonies. A Muschelkalk bench allows visitors a place to sit and reflect. A hedge of Ölweiden encircles the Gemeinschaftsgrabstätte der AIDS Toten, creating a sense of peaceful enclosure.

The Gemeinschaftsgrabstätte der AIDS Toten is a touching example of how a community can come together to honor those lost to a devastating disease. It is more than just a cemetery. It’s a place where love and remembrance live on. It stands as a quiet testament to the lives and struggles of those who battled HIV and AIDS. It is a place where their stories are not forgotten.
