Picture a serene villa nestled amidst a sprawling park, its weathered facade whispering tales of grandeur and decline. This is Villa Medolago-Attanasio, an 18th-century gem in the heart of Limbiate, a charming town just north of Milan. The villa was once a testament to the wealth and influence of the Molinari family, prominent merchants in Milan.

Giuseppe Antonio Bianchi, a renowned Lombardy architect, transformed a cluster of buildings into a majestic U-shaped villa, a design typical of Milanese villas of the time. Two symmetrical wings, each with two floors, flank the central body, crowned by a three-arched portico rising to three floors. At the villa’s apex, perched on mill wheels, are statues of eagles, proudly displaying the Molinari family crest, a symbol of their power and influence.

Throughout the years, the villa passed through the hands of several families: the Molinari, the Medolago, and finally, the Rasini. Each change in ownership marked a new era in the villa’s history, reflecting the changing fortunes and tastes of its owners. After World War II, the villa was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

In the 1990s, a glimmer of hope emerged. Plans to restore the villa and repurpose it as the municipality’s headquarters were made but ultimately failed. In 2008, Armando Verdiglione and his wife Cristina purchased the villa with plans to transform it into a luxury hotel. This dream, however, was short-lived. In 2014, the villa was seized and confiscated due to Verdiglione’s legal troubles, including tax evasion and embezzlement.

In 2017, a devastating fire ravaged the right wing of the roof, leaving only the perimeter walls standing. The villa, a poignant reminder of its former glory, seemed destined for ruin. However, the municipality of Limbiate, recognizing the historical and cultural significance of Villa Medolago-Attanasio, made a bold decision.

In 2021, the municipality successfully purchased the villa and its expansive park, covering nearly 80,000 square meters. Plans for the villa’s restoration and the future of the surrounding area are underway. The municipality, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, aims to revitalize this historic site, creating a vibrant cultural hub in Limbiate.

In a poignant tribute to Luca Attanasio, a native of Limbiate and ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo who was tragically killed in service, the villa was renamed Villa Medolago-Attanasio. The new name honors his memory and signifies a renewed chapter for the villa, one filled with hope and optimism.

As you stand before Villa Medolago-Attanasio, you can almost hear the echoes of its rich past – the bustle of the Molinari family, the grand visions of its later owners, and the resilience of the villa itself. Today, this historic villa is not just a reminder of the past, but a beacon of hope for the future, waiting to reclaim its rightful place as a cherished landmark in Limbiate.
