Why is Villa Concordia so special? It’s more than just a pretty building. Standing on the banks of the Regnitz River this Baroque masterpiece is a vibrant hub for artistic creation. Built between 1716 and 1722 by Ignaz Tobias Böttinger it’s his second palace in Bamberg. His first is nearby. Now it houses art galleries.

Villa Concordia is much more than a historical monument. Since 1998 it’s been an international artists’ residence. Imagine twelve artists from Germany and another country living and working here together. They each receive a scholarship and a place to create. For five or eleven months they immerse themselves in their craft. This fosters collaboration and cultural exchange.

The name Concordia itself means harmony and agreement. It truly captures the spirit of the place. Artists from all over Europe have graced its halls. Portugal Iceland Switzerland Russia Spain Norway Italy Greece Lithuania Great Britain Slovenia Finland and France are just a few. These artists are chosen not by applying but by a board of trustees. The process ensures a diverse and talented group. The selection is based on merit. Each artist contributes to a lively cultural environment.

The Villa itself is stunning. Two apartments are located in the main Baroque structure. The modern Orangerie adds six more apartments. It overlooks the gardens. Four more apartments are in the Neuer Ebracher Hof. This was once the town residence for monks from Ebrach Monastery. The Villa also has a modern extension. It houses an exhibition space a library and communal rooms.

Villa Concordia’s impact extends beyond its walls. The artists’ exhibitions readings and concerts are open to the public. There are over eighty events each year. Many are free. This creates a unique connection between the artists and the Bamberg community. The Villa’s blend of Baroque elegance and modern additions reflects its mission. It bridges old and new fostering innovation and collaboration. A true testament to the power of art and international cooperation. This is Villa Concordia a place where creativity flourishes. A place of harmony. A place of concord.
