A vibrant community nestled amidst grey-stone facades This is Milton Parc in Montreal.

Milton Parc a neighbourhood in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough boasts a rich history. In the late 19th century affluent businessmen and their families resided in its historic townhouses. The area remained wealthy until the early 20th century. Many then moved to Westmount or the suburbs.

Today Milton Parc is known as the McGill Ghetto. This is because many McGill University students live there. The name is ironic though. The area isn’t segregated due to economic factors. Instead its population chooses to stay within its boundaries. This is due to cultural and linguistic barriers. Many families and long-term residents also call Milton Parc home.

In the 1970s community activists fought against the La Cité complex. This large project included apartments offices a mall and a hotel. They feared it would destroy the area’s character. Their campaign was successful partially. McGill University did purchase part of La Cité. It transformed it into student residences. This increased the student population significantly. Another hotel purchase also happened in 2009 further increasing student numbers.

The Milton Parc Citizens Committee played a vital role. This grassroots group fought against plans to demolish the neighbourhood in the 1960s. Their efforts saved the neighbourhood. They formed housing co-operatives protecting its unique character. They even successfully fought the demolition of an overpass improving safety and adding green spaces.

Milton Parc is more than just student housing. It’s a testament to community resilience. It’s a place where history and modern life coexist. It’s a neighborhood that successfully fought for its identity and future. It’s a community that deserves to be celebrated. It’s a place worth exploring. It is Milton Parc Montreal.
