The Srithanya Hospital isn’t just a place of healing, it’s a place of history. Standing tall in Nonthaburi, it has existed since 1941. Before it was Srithanya Hospital, it was called the Nonthaburi Psychiatric Hospital. It was the first of its kind in the country and started with only 150 beds. The hospital was the first to provide psychiatric treatment for men suffering from chronic mental illnesses. It eventually became a place that extended its care to include rehabilitation for prisoners. In 1954, there was a change of name. Srithanya was chosen to make sure that people were comfortable asking for help. The stigma around mental health was lessened with this name change. Today, Srithanya is the largest psychiatric hospital in all of Thailand. Some may not realize that Srithanya is not just a hospital, it is a center of knowledge, where people are given the tools to return to society in a healthy and self-sustainable way. Srithanya Hospital is a place of hope on the journey towards mental well-being.
