Cars rumble overhead. This is the Bitterfelder Brücke. This bridge carries the Bitterfelder Straße over the Märkische Allee and the Wriezener Bahn. The Bitterfelder Brücke is a vital structure in Berlin. It connects Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg. The bridge’s history is quite interesting.
The Bitterfelder Brücke was first built in 1979. It facilitated traffic flow in Berlin. In the early 2000s, the city decided to expand the Bitterfelder Straße. This expansion required an upgrade to the bridge. Between 2003 and 2004, the Bitterfelder Brücke was expanded. It went from two lanes to four.
The construction was complex. Authorities were very concerned about traffic. Vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic had to continue during construction. This was especially important between Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg. The engineers managed to keep traffic flowing. The old and new bridge sections are very close. There is only 1.25 meters between them. Both bridge sections have six spans. Each span is 20 meters long. They cross the roads below at an angle of 80.0144 gon. New streetlights were also installed. The construction cost 1,878,000 euros.
The Bitterfelder Brücke consists of two separate structures. They run parallel to each other. The northern bridge is 11 meters wide. The southern bridge is 9 meters wide. Both sides of the Bitterfelder Brücke have footpaths and cycle paths. Initially, the bridge had a different name. It was called Industriesammelstraßenbrücke. The official renaming to Bitterfelder Brücke happened on October 8, 1997.
However, the Bitterfelder Brücke has faced challenges. In March 2023, the newer part of the bridge had to be closed to cars. This part had been built in 2004. Inspections revealed cracks on the underside. These cracks were near the pillars. They also appeared near the abutments. Bus lines X54 and 154 could no longer travel west. They had to be diverted. Traffic on Märkische Allee and Wriezener Bahn was not affected. The city considered using the older bridge for traffic in both directions.
Today, the Bitterfelder Brücke remains an important part of Berlin’s infrastructure. It shows the city’s continuous efforts to maintain and improve its transport network. It stands as a testament to Berlin’s resilience. It also reflects the ongoing challenges of maintaining infrastructure.
