How about a blast from the past at Palos Verdes High School? This isn’t just any high school. It’s a place with a history as captivating as the ocean views it boasts.
Palos Verdes High School opened its doors in 1961. It quickly became the first public high school on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Imagine over two thousand students filling these halls back then. The school soon became known for both academic and athletic achievements.
But the story doesn’t end there. Demographic shifts caused declining enrollment. This led to the school’s closure in 1991. The campus transformed into Palos Verdes Intermediate School. However, the story of Palos Verdes High School wasn’t over yet.
By 2002, the district decided to reopen Palos Verdes High School. Enrollment at Peninsula High School was climbing, causing overcrowding. Palos Verdes High School reclaimed its original name. It was ready for a new chapter. By the first year, enrollment reached 470 students.
The architecture here is quite unique. In 1959, the Los Angeles Unified School District hired Richard Neutra, Robert Alexander and Carrington Lewis to design the school. Neutra was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Lewis designed Palos Verdes City Hall. The architects faced unique challenges. They had to meet strict building requirements. The location near the ocean also needed consideration. Neutra implemented metal supports, often called spider leg supports. These held up canopies adjacent to the classrooms.
The buildings were designed with clean lines. The designs included stucco, gable walls and roofs. This shielded the courtyards from ocean winds. The theme was to design an indoor outdoor high school.
Palos Verdes High School sits on 37 acres. The campus has many wood framed buildings. Larger facilities like the gym are made of concrete. The design blended well with the surrounding homes. The community supported the project. It preserved the ocean views for its neighbors.
Let’s talk about the Sea Kings. That’s the Palos Verdes High School athletic teams’ nickname. The school colors are red, black and white. The mascot is Poseidon the Greek god of the sea. Palos Verdes competes in the California Interscholastic Federation. In 2024, Palos Verdes won the CIF Division 2 AA state championship in football.
Senior Park is the heart of the Palos Verdes High School campus. It is a central gathering place. Graduations, performances and school dances happen here. The James Kinney Estate and PVHS Booster Club sponsored the PVHS 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign. The first phase was to replace the damaged concrete stage and steps. Further work includes a new Sea King mural and a bronze tribute plaque to James Kinney.
Many alumni have gone on to do great things. Dana Rohrabacher was a U.S. House of Representatives member. Bill Laimbeer was a Detroit Pistons star. Matt Wuerker won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. Pete Sampras is a tennis great.
Palos Verdes High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a story of community and resilience. It’s a place where students become Sea Kings. The Palos Verdes High School’s legacy continues. Its impact is visible in every corner of this campus.
