Imagine seven spiritual people meeting for prayer in May 1931. From that humble service, Saint Lukes Baptist Church was born. It began a journey of faith and community. The story of Saint Lukes Baptist Church is a testament to perseverance and vision.
Let’s explore the history of Saint Lukes Baptist Church. Its early days shaped its identity. The attendees included Rev. David V. Revere. He became the church’s first pastor. The church first met at various sites. Then in 1937, Saint Lukes Baptist Church purchased its first building. It was located at Western Avenue and Elwood Street. Western Avenue is now James H. McGhee Boulevard.
Ten years later in 1947 Saint Lukes Baptist Church needed more space. They bought a larger building at Lakeview Avenue and Clifton Drive. The church continued to grow. In 1953 they added to the building at a cost of $70000. Saint Lukes Baptist Church invested in its future.
Throughout the years Saint Lukes Baptist Church produced many ministers. These sons went on to shepherd their own flocks. Rev. Roger Heath Rev. William Piner Rev. George W. Brown and Rev. Morris Smyth all served under Rev. Revere. Rev. David Marks Rev. Phillip Pashal Rev. Orville Littlejohn Rev. Jeffery Thomas and Rev. Ashton G. Allen served under Rev. Walker. Saint Lukes Baptist Church also had many associate ministers.
Rev. Revere served for 37 years. After his death in October 1968 the church called Rev. Sylvester Walker. He had been an associate minister. Rev. Walker became pastor in March 1969. Under his leadership the church accomplished much. His vision included a new building for Saint Lukes Baptist Church.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 21 1999. The location was 2262 N. Gettysburg Avenue. Construction began in the spring of 2001. The new edifice cost $3.5 million. On July 21 2002 Saint Lukes Baptist Church moved to its new site. The dedication service marked a new chapter.
The new building offered many improvements. It had over 26000 square feet. The sanctuary seated over 900 people. The choir could accommodate over 100. Sylvester Walker Fellowship Hall seated over 300. There were 10 educational rooms. The building also included the David Revere Chapel administrative offices a commercial kitchen and a large vestibule.
A dedication ceremony was held on July 18 2004. The cornerstone was dedicated for the new building. The Rev. David V. Revere Chapel and the Sylvester Walker Fellowship Hall were named. Photographs of Reverends Revere and Walker were unveiled.
Rev. Walker retired on October 31 2014 after 45 years of service. He passed away on July 14 2015. After his death Rev. Renard D. Allen Jr. was called. He became pastor on March 5 2017.
Under Rev. Allen Saint Lukes Baptist Church continues to grow. His vision 20/20 inspires the congregation. Nearly 250 new members have joined. Almost 100 baptisms have taken place in four years. The church’s new motto is A ministry for People on the Grow.
Saint Lukes Baptist Church is a thriving community. Its congregation prays and serves the needs of the community. Pastor Allen calls their work history-making and history-shaping ministry.
Saint Lukes Baptist Church achieved many firsts. It was the first black church in Dayton to open its doors for a civil rights meeting. It was the first to provide a bus ministry. Saint Lukes Baptist Church was the first to organize an all-male chorus. It was the first to have a radio broadcast. The church was the first to host the Northwestern Ohio Baptist Association. Saint Lukes Baptist Church was the first black church with over 1000 members to select leaders from within the congregation. Also it’s the only black church in Dayton to have had only three pastors in its 87-year history.
