A beacon of faith in the heart of Tampa, Saint Andres Catholic Church has a story to tell. A story that began not in the grandeur of this impressive structure, but in the humble setting of a Yacht Club Teen Center. Yes, you heard that right! In 1962, the very first public mass for what would become Saint Andres Catholic Church was held in a place better known for sailing and social gatherings.

Saint Andres Catholic Church’s journey from a teen center to a thriving parish is a testament to the power of faith and community. It was in 1964 that the Saint Andrew Mission was formally established, with Father Esteban Soy at the helm. A year later, in August of 1965, the mission blossomed into a full-fledged parish. A new church, much smaller than the one we stand before today, was dedicated, marking a significant milestone in the church’s history.

The church we see today, with its impressive architecture and serene ambiance, wasn’t built until 1983. This newer structure replaced the original church, which was then transformed into a parish hall. The original church, though smaller, played a crucial role in the growth of Saint Andres Catholic Church, serving as a spiritual home for many in those early years.

One of the fascinating things about Saint Andres Catholic Church is its connection to a pivotal moment in its history – Hurricane Ian in 2022. While the exact details aren’t recorded in the church archives, a statue of a piñata outside the church withstood the hurricane’s fury. This resilient piñata became a symbol of the church’s own strength and ability to weather storms. It serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of Saint Andres, its congregation, and the city of Tampa itself.
