Colonial Park Cemetery is more than just a graveyard. It’s a living monument to Savannah’s history. It’s the oldest intact municipal cemetery in the city. It bears witness to epidemics duels and the Civil War. It has seen Savannah grow and change around it. It remains a peaceful green space in the heart of the bustling Historic District.

Button Gwinnett a signer of the Declaration of Independence is buried here. His dramatic end in a duel adds a layer of intrigue. So too does the story of General Nathanael Greene. This somber testament to the city’s past is a chilling reminder of a time when disease swept through the city.

Union soldiers camped on these grounds during the Civil War. Some allegedly defaced headstones. Their actions altered dates and details forever twisting the records of lives already lost. The cemetery was expanded three times by 1789. It remained the city’s primary burial ground until 1853 when Laurel Grove Cemetery took over.

It’s a place where the living and the dead intertwine. Locals stroll their dogs. Tourists linger reading the weathered inscriptions. A sense of history hangs heavy in the air.

The whispers of those long gone still echo. They speak of triumphs and tragedies. Of lives lived and lost. Of a city that built upon its past. Colonial Park Cemetery is a place where the past lives on. A place to reflect on the enduring spirit of Savannah.
