He even established a school on the church grounds in 1888. The school served both boys and girls. This shows the community’s deep commitment to education and faith.

The design of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is breathtaking. The Neo-Gothic style is evident in its spires lancet-shaped windows and intricate details. Frenchman Alexandre Izambert designed the foundation. The local firm Swan & MacLaren oversaw the construction. The cast-iron columns and metal frameworks were imported from France. This blend of French design and local expertise is truly remarkable.

The church wasn’t spared the hardships of war. During the Japanese Occupation it survived bombing raids. Though the school and presbytery suffered damage the main church remained standing.
