Legend has it that, during the Qing Dynasty, seven families came together to enshrine a golden statue of Baosheng Dadi. He was a famous physician from the Song Dynasty, known for his healing powers and compassion.
The families, who had emigrated from Guangdong to escape hardship and seek a better life in Taiwan, initially built a small, humble shrine. It was known as the “Hezhao Temple”. However, the area prospered under the watchful gaze of Baosheng Dadi, their prayers seemingly answered with good fortune and health. In 1910, as a testament to their gratitude and the growing belief in the deity’s powers, the descendants of these seven families pooled their resources to erect the grand temple you see before you.
The Luzhou Baohe Temple is a magnificent example of traditional southern Chinese architecture. It’s a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of the early Luzhou community. Every year, on the fifteenth day of the third lunar month, the temple bursts into life with a spectacular celebration in honor of Baosheng Dadi’s birthday. The air thrums with the rhythmic beat of drums and gongs, the sweet scent of incense filling the air as locals throng the temple courtyard in colorful processions, bringing offerings and seeking blessings. The Luzhou Baohe Temple stands as a symbol of hope, healing, and the enduring power of community – a place where history whispers from every corner.
