Gazing out at the seemingly endless expanse of water, what secrets does this bridge hold? Right before us stands the Donghai Bridge. This bridge is no ordinary structure. It connects Shanghai to the Yangshan Deep Water Port. This port sits on Yangshan Island in the East China Sea.

The Donghai Bridge stretches 32.5 kilometers. That is over 20 miles. It was one of the world’s longest cross-sea bridges when built. Imagine the scale of this engineering marvel.

Opened in 2005, the Donghai Bridge serves a vital purpose. It provides a direct route to Yangshan Port. This port is crucial for Shanghai’s trade. Cargo ships and trucks use this efficient route.

But the Donghai Bridge is more than just functional. It offers panoramic views of the East China Sea. As you cross it, you can see the vast water below. You might spot the industrial port in the distance. On a clear day, even Shanghai’s skyline is visible. The views are especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset. The golden light reflecting on the ocean is magnificent.

Consider the challenges faced during its construction. The project faced severe environmental conditions. The technical difficulties were immense. Yet, the Donghai Bridge was completed in just 40 months. This is from June 2002 to October 2005. That is a testament to the ingenuity of the engineers. They developed safe and efficient offshore construction techniques.

While you cannot stop directly on the Donghai Bridge, the surrounding areas offer leisure activities. Near Yangshan Island, fishing and boating excursions are popular.

In January 2014, plans were announced for a second bridge. This bridge would combine road and rail. It aims to meet the growing transport demands of Yangshan Deep-Water Port. This shows the continuous development of this vital infrastructure.

Sadly, the Donghai Bridge has also seen tragedy. A bus accident occurred here. Six people died and more than 20 were injured.

As we stand here, consider the Donghai Bridge. It is a symbol of Shanghai’s ambition. It links the city to the world through trade. It is an amazing feat of engineering. It offers stunning views. It is a testament to human innovation and determination.
