A wave of cool air washes over you as you step inside. Welcome to the King Salman Science Oasis.
This isn’t just any science museum. It’s a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to education and innovation. Founded in 1985 it was the first science center in the entire country. It began as a vision of King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud then Governor of Riyadh. Inspired by the Kingdom’s participation in the Space Shuttle Discovery mission the Oasis was established to serve all segments of society.
Its initial location was temporary in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter. This changed in 2004 when royal approval granted land within the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. The Oasis evolved adopting a public-private partnership model. This ensured sustainability and diverse institutional goals were met. The cornerstone for the current building was laid in a ceremony presided over by King Salman himself. He even became the honorary supreme president.
The Oasis doesn’t just present exhibits. It is a vibrant hub for science. It hosts visiting exhibitions and scientific festivals. It offers seminars lectures and practical workshops both in person and virtually. The exhibits themselves showcase Saudi Arabia’s global leadership in various fields. These include energy manufacturing industries aerospace water communications technology and mining. The design is remarkable. It’s a built landscape that cleverly integrates with the natural features of a former river course.
The cubic exhibition pavilions are arranged along this wadi. This shows an understanding of the site’s history and the earth’s history. The main entrance is striking with a curved roof. This resembles a flying carpet or a wing. It’s backlit at night creating a stunning light display. The interior is equally impressive. The net-like steel construction creates spaciousness. Interactive exhibits are integrated into culturally anchored motifs. It’s a perfect blend of form and function modern design and traditional elements.
The King Salman Science Oasis is more than a museum. It’s a symbol of progress a beacon of knowledge and a testament to a nation’s commitment to a brighter future. The first phase completed in 2022 but the Oasis continues to evolve. Its dedication to inspire a lifelong love of science truly shines through. So explore its wonders and embrace the possibilities that lie within.
