Nestled in the heart of Rhodes, Sancta Maria, also known as the Church of Our Lady of Victory, whispers tales of resilience and rebirth. Imagine standing here, before its unassuming facade, and feeling the echoes of centuries past. Sancta Maria’s story begins long before this structure existed, during the Crusader era. The original Church of Our Lady of Victory stood proudly near the city walls. It was a testament to the Knights’ faith, tragically destroyed after the Turkish conquest of 1522. The Franciscans, who had shepherded the church, were forced to flee. They carried with them the memory of their beloved Sancta Maria, a symbol of faith lost. Yet, hope, like a flickering candle, refused to be extinguished. In 1719, the Franciscans returned. They didn’t rebuild on the old site. Instead, they chose a new location, here in the Neohori district. This Sancta Maria, rising from the ashes of its predecessor, was completed in 1743. The church became a beacon for the Catholic community, a place of solace and spiritual nourishment. The story doesn’t end there. Sancta Maria faced another trial in 1926. A devastating earthquake caused the bell tower to crumble. Undeterred, the community rallied, their faith unshaken. The church was renovated, a new facade erected. This facade, with its Crusader-style ornaments, stands before you today. It serves as a poignant reminder of the church’s enduring legacy. Look closely at the intricate wrought iron gate. It was crafted in Italy, a symbol of artistry and devotion. Above the portal, a statue of the Virgin Mary watches over, her serene presence a source of comfort and inspiration. Step inside, and you’ll find a single nave, bathed in soft light. Three cross vaults divide the space. The church culminates in a quadrangular choir, crowned by a cupola and lantern. The interior is simple, austere. Two chapels, dedicated to St. Francis and St. Anthony, flank the main altar. The altar itself is faced with Carrera marble, a testament to the artistry of Rhodian sculptor Cosimo Salvatore. Sancta Maria is more than just a church. It is a living testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community. As you leave, carry with you the story of Sancta Maria, a story etched in stone and whispered through the ages.
