For centuries Agia Varvara has been a vital link. It sits on the main north-south road. Travelers have passed through for generations. They journeyed between Heraklion and the island’s heart. The village’s cool climate offered respite from the summer heat. Its fertile land produced abundant crops.

During Venetian rule Agia Varvara thrived. Twelve distinct neighborhoods existed. Each bore the name of a prominent family. Venetian documents mention the village frequently. A 16th and 17th century presence is well documented. An Egyptian census from 1834 lists 40 families. By 1881 its population had grown to 450. Then by 1900 it reached 586.

Agia Varvara’s location made it a battleground. It often saw fierce fighting. A local hero Mathiou Kapitakis fought alongside Karaiskakis. He died bravely at Faliro. Another warrior Logios became a legend at Aghios Thomas. These men defended their home. Their courage is remembered to this day.

Atop a nearby rock stands a chapel. It is dedicated to Profitis Ilias. This rock was once twice its size. Part of it crumbled at the beginning of the 19th century. An ancient temple once stood there. The chapel is a silent witness to history.

Today Agia Varvara is a modern village. It boasts all the conveniences of modern life. The Cultural Association organizes a lively tsikoudia feast each summer. A carnival celebration also brightens the early spring. New and old churches stand side-by-side. They honor the patron saint Agia Varvara. Three Byzantine churches also deserve your attention. These are Profitis Ilias Aghios Giorgos and Aghios Ioannis. The old monastery of Aghia Pelagia is near the cemetery.
